Walking Life’s Tightrope

AI entrepreneur Vinothini Raju and her mentor, Diane Mueller, show that the best mentorships are about mutual growth

As I learned through my decades in the tech world, mentorship is critical. I’m incredibly thankful for the mentors that guided me at different points along my journey, so I was particularly inspired to sit down with Vinothini “Vino” Raju, a visionary entrepreneur, and her mentor Diane Mueller, a seasoned leader in the tech industry. Their story isn't just about code or algorithms—it's about the beauty that happens when experience meets innovation, when gratitude meets guidance, and when two women decide to shine a light for others.

Dancing with Risk: A Founder’s Philosophy

Vino's approach to entrepreneurship is influenced by unexpected sources—including high-wire walkers and ice-breaking ships. She draws inspiration from real-life stories that teach us about confidence, balance, and turning adversity into advantage, as in The Walk and The Icebreaker. She's made multiple pivots throughout her career, each one requiring both balance and boldness. Her perspective on risk-taking and resilience offers a fresh lens on navigating the tech landscape.

You have to be risk taking, you need to have confidence, you need to know how to balance, and you need to know how to make your adversities work the best for you.
— Vinothini Raju

Today, she is founder and CEO of gopaddle, which offers DevOps consulting and a low-code integrated development environment (IDE) for Kubernetes. Kubernetes, often called “the operating system for the cloud,” is an open-source platform used by half of Fortune 500 companies to manage and deploy containerized applications at scale.

Bold Beginnings & Career Pivots

Vino’s career has been a journey of brave choices, seeking growth over security as she moved from consulting to building a company that brings together cloud native and generative AI technologies into a unique SaaS platform to more efficiently manage IT operations. She credits her father’s entrepreneurial spirit and her mother’s compassion for her resilience, and this blend of drive and empathy fuels her leadership in the tech world. Her journey reveals how each pivot brought her closer to a purpose-driven career, demonstrating the courage required to embrace change.

Mentorship as Mutual Growth

Diane Mueller has been a guiding light through many of Vino’s pivotal moments. Their mentor-mentee relationship is built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to continuous learning. Diane speaks candidly about the satisfaction she finds in supporting and learning from Vino, emphasizing that true mentorship is a two-way street.

As a mentor, what you look for is someone who brings a lot of expertise and domain knowledge that you don’t have. It’s not as much fun to go in and mentor someone that you’re not learning from.
— Diane Mueller

Both women learn from each other, demonstrating that mentorship is a shared journey of growth and discovery. Vino brings deep expertise in real-world AI implementation and use cases, while Diane contributes decades of community experience and industry connections through which Vino has expanded opportunities to build partnerships, showcase her work, and broaden her reach.

The Gratitude Mindset

In an industry often focused on data-driven metrics, Vino brings a refreshingly human perspective to the advice she offers others. Her most profound learning isn't about coding or business strategy—it's about the power of expressed gratitude.

Throughout her career, Vino has found that gratitude is a powerful catalyst for growth. She explains that actively voicing appreciation can foster openness to new ideas and deeper connections, and fuel growth in unexpected ways. Together, she and Diane emphasize that expressing genuine gratitude, even in the face of challenges, can open doors, create bonds, and lead to meaningful success. This philosophy has shaped Vino’s personal journey as well as how she builds relationships and leads her team.

We really appreciate when people help us out, but the moment we are vocal about it and we show that gratitude, the world changes around us.
— Vinothini Raju

Paving Practical Paths for AI Implementation

In a world where technology often races ahead of ethical considerations, Vino is charting a different course. Her work focuses on making AI both powerful and responsible, setting new standards for how AI can be integrated into enterprise products. She’s tackling crucial questions about privacy, compliance, and human oversight.

Can we use the outcomes from AI to make decisions? And what are the security and compliance challenges that come along the way? I think that’s the biggest challenge that we have today. We have put forward a workflow where developers can use generative AI much more comfortably.
— Vinothini Raju

Purpose Over Profit

For both Vino and Diane, success goes beyond traditional metrics like revenue or status; it’s about creating meaningful impact. Vino’s perspective on success has evolved over the years, shifting from numbers and headcounts to purpose and resilience. She believes that true success lies in continuously adding value, adapting to change, and solving real problems for her customers. Diane, now focused on mentoring and choosing meaningful projects, shares a similar view—finding success in the ability to uplift others and foster community.

Standing Up and Standing Out

Being visibly present matters, whether as a woman tech founder or a 62-year-old openly queer luminary, and breaking barriers means showing up authentically despite industry biases. Throughout their journeys, both Vino and Diane have shined brightly, bravely defying norms and creating space for others by boldly being themselves.

If you don’t see yourself in the room, you don’t feel like you belong in the room. For most of my career, I’ve been out there, openly queer, and now I’m 62, still here. Representation is being there, standing up, and saying, ‘Get used to it.
— Diane Mueller
